Chapter 13

Abby

“What I can’t understand is why someone won’t blindly spend that much money on me after meeting me for one day. This show makes me hate myself.”

Riley’s voice resonated so loudly on speakerphone that Abby’s cell rattled on the coffee table and sent small ripples through the glass of wine resting next to it. Abby rescued the glass, snatching it from the table and topping it off with the last of the bottle she’d opened at the start of her 90 Day Fiancé marathon date with Riley. Cramming a year’s worth of wedding planning into four weeks had left very little time for their reality TV and wine nights. This evening, Naomi and Will were selecting wedding rings, which meant that the wedding party had the night off. She and Riley had put it to good use by catching up on one of their favorite shows.

It was strange watching a reality show since she was in the middle of her own. Knowing what the behind-the-scenes were really like had dulled some of the shine, if she was being honest with herself. In between the 90 Day Fiancé episodes, she and Riley had stopped to watch tonight’s Wedding Special, which was the recap of wardrobe shopping from the day before. Out of the several hours spent—and a few especially good one-liners that Abby had been sure would make the cut—Abby’s only screen time was her repeatedly trying, and failing, to bustle Naomi’s dress. The tiny buttons and loops were not only invisible on the cascade of fabric, but when she was able to find them, they were inhumanely small.

“You’re going to be late for your reception because I’ll be spending two hours trying to get these buttoned,” Abby had said, unflatteringly sprawled on the floor, tongue poking out from her lips as she tried for the tenth time to replicate what the bridal attendant had shown her.

“Here is my fool proof way to ensure you’ll be ready on the wedding day,” the attendant said.

“I’m listening,” Abby replied.

“The night before the wedding, get some drinks in your system. When everything gets a bit fuzzy, practice. Then drink a little more, and practice some more. The muscle memory will be fresh for the next day, and you’ll be prepared to do it a little tipsy.”

Naomi looked over her shoulder. “Sounds like we have a plan for the night before the wedding, Abby. Drinking and bustling.”

“God help me,” Abby had replied.

This is what Nightly Global News had decided to highlight, which, she told herself, was definitely better than if they had chosen her reaction when she found out that Freya was the best woman. She had let out what she could only assume sounded like a death rattle upon envisioning what it would mean to walk arm-in-arm up the aisle with Freya at the wedding, while having to act like she hadn’t overheard that Freya was madly in love with her and had been since high school. Luckily, her friends had no clue that she knew, and they likely assumed that her reaction was pre-pocket dial.
